Next week we will celebrate our Annual Salute to Women of Achievement, this event gives us the opportunity to acknowledge the careers of women who are doing big things in the New York Construction industry. We are honored to be celebrating such smart, successful women. We asked this year’s Honorees a few questions and wanted to share!
Rodica Kestenband, PE, Vice President Building Structures, WSP
PWC: What’s your favorite project you’ve ever worked on?
RK: Time Warner Center is probably my favorite project, a 55-strory building located at Columbus Circle. The project was the largest I had worked on at the time, encompassing 2.5 million square feet of construction. One of the most interesting features of the project is that two 35-story twin reinforced concrete towers sit atop a 20-story steel construction “podium.” The project was both interesting and challenging considering the variety of uses envisioned by the owner, ranging from retail spaces, apartment condominiums and offices, to studios and auditoriums. One can live, work and be entertained at Time Warner Center without stepping out of the building.
PWC: One piece of advice for women getting into the construction industry?
RK: Do not be shy. Do not assume a passive role and always challenge your supervisors by asking for more responsibilities and leadership positions in relevant projects.
PWC: What’s your favorite thing to do in New York?
RK: I very much enjoy the cultural environment and opportunities that this city provides. Perhaps my favorite activity is to attend the Metropolitan Opera at the Lincoln Center, which also gives me the opportunity to see the next-door Fordham University School of Law, another favorite project of mine.
PWC: What’s been your proudest moment in your career?
RK: Being one of the recipients of the PWC Annual Salute to Women of Achievement is, undoubtedly, one of the highlights of my professional career as structural engineer.
PWC: What’s the best thing about your current job?
RK: There are many things to enjoy about my work at WSP. I feel privileged to be part of a great team of engineers working on very interesting and even iconic projects in the city and elsewhere. Also, I must mention the spirit of collaboration and team-building atmosphere at our office, which is not only very inviting but highly synergistic in accomplishing our main goal of providing engineering services with technical excellence and in support of our client’s requirements.
